20ft Container Dimensions & Details

The 20ft standard container, sometimes called a TEU (Twenty-foot Equivalent Unit) or a conex box, is the global standard in intermodal shipping. It is the most widely available container size and the most practical choice for most New York residential and small-business customers.

At 20 feet long and 8 feet wide it fits comfortably in a standard driveway and can be placed on most lots without special equipment or extensive site preparation. The steel handles what New York weather brings, including lake effect snow and deep winter frost and Deep frost north of the Mohawk from December into March, which heaves the ground on the way out and can set a container rocking on a corner that was level in November, Thaw season weight postings, when towns put limits on their own roads and a loaded truck waits for the road rather than for the weather, Repeated freeze and thaw cycling through the snowbelt winters, which works at any seam that is already holding water, Summer humidity in the Hudson Valley and on Long Island, where an assembly has to dry in both directions across the year rather than mostly outward, Remnants of tropical systems that reach New York as rain rather than as wind, which matters most on the low flats along the Hudson, the Mohawk, the Susquehanna and the Delaware, where the water comes up first.

Condition Options

Used WWT or One-Trip: Which Is Right for You?

Used Wind & Water Tight (WWT)

Inspected and certified to keep wind and water out. It shows the cosmetic wear you would expect from a container that spent years in commercial shipping service: surface rust, paint chips, minor dents. The interior stays dry, the doors seal tight, and the floor is structurally solid. For a full breakdown of every grade we sell, see our container condition guide.

Best for: General storage, construction sites, farm use, any application where appearance matters less than value.

Warranty: 5 year.

One-Trip (Like New)

It made a single ocean crossing from the factory and is essentially brand new. Minimal cosmetic marks from that one voyage, clean and dry interior, excellent floor condition, like-new paint. It costs more than used WWT, and it is the cleanest container you can buy short of a factory-new unit.

Best for: Conversions, food-adjacent storage, sensitive storage, anyone who wants the best-looking unit.

Warranty: 10 year structural and no-leak.

Use Cases

What New York Customers Use 20ft Containers For

Renovations on the older city blocks in Buffalo, Rochester and Syracuse, where the lot is narrow, the drive runs between two houses and there is no garage to empty into.

Contractor tool and material storage on job sites across Erie, Monroe, Onondaga and Saratoga counties, replacing the daily load in and load out through a short building season.

Farm, orchard and woodlot storage across the Southern Tier, the North Country and the fruit belt, where the container is often the only lockable building on the parcel.

Restaurant, retail and event overflow behind buildings in Albany, Ithaca and Saratoga Springs where the back of house ran out of room.

Sites that will never take a 40ft: two 20ft boxes place on a tight village lot or a switchbacked lakeside drive and give you two doors and two locations.

Camp and seasonal property in the Adirondacks, the Catskills and the Thousand Islands, where a steel box holds through a winter that no shed survives well.

FAQ

20ft Container Questions

The container arrives on a tilt bed truck, which needs about 70 feet of straight, level run measured back from where the container will sit, at least 14 feet of overhead clearance with no low branches, utility lines or carport roofs in the path, and roughly 10 to 12 feet of width. Describe your approach and your drop spot when you ask for a quote and we will tell you whether the site will take it before anything is scheduled.
Wind and Water Tight units start at $2,886 delivered in Buffalo, and delivery is included in that number. What you pay depends on the grade you choose, on what is in stock when you order and on the access at your site. Prices are set by our supply partner and change without notice, so the price quoted to you in writing is the one that applies to your order. Prices captured 2026-08-06.
Warranty runs by grade: one-trip units carry a 10 year structural and no-leak warranty, cargo worthy and wind and water tight units carry 5 years, and economy units carry a 1 year, no roof leak only warranty.
Set the container on solid bearing at the four corner castings rather than straight onto turf. Pressure treated timbers, solid concrete blocks or a compacted gravel pad under each corner keeps the box level, keeps the doors square and keeps the wood floor out of standing water. Grade so that surface water and snowmelt run away from the corners rather than under them, and pick the spot on foot rather than from a photograph, because drumlin country reads flat in a picture and is not.
